Fibre glass wire mesh

Fiberglass Window Screen material comes in convenient 100-foot rolls, with widths ranging from 18 inches to 120 inches. Aluminum screen material also comes in 100-foot rolls, but it offers a slightly narrower range of available widths compared to fiberglass.

More Information

The mesh size, measured by wires per inch on both the length (warp) and width (weft), is an important consideration. An 18×14 mesh size is now the standard, although 16×16 was once common, and other popular sizes include 18×18 and 20×20.

Fiberglass solar screens are designed to provide over 75% UV protection. They achieve this by using thicker strands and a tighter mesh pattern than regular 18×14 fiberglass window screening. While this may reduce visibility slightly, it offers advantages such as increased privacy since Solar Screens are difficult to see through from the outside but easier from the inside.

Finer mesh screens have been developed to keep out very small insects, and they also serve as a barrier against pollens and allergens, helping to control allergic reactions.

Fiberglass Window Screen Installation:

Start by removing the spline, which is a round strip of material sitting in a trench around the screen frame. You may need to use a screwdriver to gently pry it out. Set the spline aside, but don’t discard it. If you’re replacing an old screen, remove and discard the old screen fabric.
Lay the new screen fabric flat over the frame, ensuring it extends at least 1/2 inch (preferably more) beyond the spline trench on all sides. Trim the excess fabric so that it doesn’t extend more than about 1 inch past the trench on all sides. Cut the corners of the fabric at 45-degree angles to allow it to cover the spline trench while allowing the frame corners to extend past the fabric.
Use a convex-edged wheel on a spline roller to push the screen fabric into the spline trench all around the frame. Gently stretch the fabric as you work to ensure it is taut within the frame. Go around the entire frame multiple times until the fabric is snug and fully seated in the trench.
Now, press the spline back into the trench over the screen fabric using the concave-edged wheel of the spline roller. Stretch the spline as you go, aiming to have it encircle the entire frame with minimal gaps between its ends. Repeat this step two or three times until the spline is securely seated in the trench.
Hold the frame vertically and inspect it to ensure that the screen fabric is uniformly taut within the frame, with no gaps where the screen didn’t reach the trench. Also, confirm that the fabric isn’t overly tight to the point of warping the frame. If you notice any issues, remove the spline and restart from step 2.
